CHAPTER 34

Before he left Buckley’s, Jack put Elizabeth Mayweather’s address into his phone. It was a long shot that she would know why Cliff had stayed in town an extra day, but so far, long shots were all he had.

He followed the GPS directions, winding and twisting his way up the mountain, passing condominiums, then houses of varying sizes.

His cell phone buzzed. It was the sheriff.

“Tony, what’s going on?”

“Real quick, Jack. I don’t have much time.” He sounded frustrated. “The feds have doubled their efforts and are trying to take over my office.”

“It was a bomb, wasn’t it?” Jack asked.

“How did you know?”

“Something hasn’t smelled right from the beginning.”

“Yeah, I kinda figured as much, too. I just hoped I was wrong.” He sighed. “I wanted you to know, but I gotta go.”

“Hey, Tony?”

“Yeah?”

“Thanks for the call.” Jack knew Tony didn’t have to let him know about the bomb and that he would be in violation of his own office’s policies by doing so.

Jack wasn’t surprised by the news, but it cemented his determination. He was being paid for this case and needed the money, but that wasn’t the reason behind the growing fire inside him. He remembered the sound of Susan Roberts crying and the sight of Buckley angry and upset over the death of his friend. He thought of how fondly Judith had talked about Cliff. But most of all, Jack wanted to know who had been brazen enough to plant a bomb on a congressman’s plane.

Elizabeth Mayweather’s house was high up the mountain. A pair of rock columns flanking both sides of a driveway came into view just before the road ended in a cul-de-sac. Jack pulled through the columns and onto a cobblestone driveway. It was narrow and wound through a thick stand of pine; early-spring wildflowers bordered both the sides and were beginning to bloom.

The driveway opened onto a small clearing. A large log home with gingerbread moldings that looked like it had been plucked from the Alps was nestled in a thick grove of trees. Flowers and ivy draped from a dozen brightly colored window boxes.

Jack parked the truck and got out, then took a flagstone path toward the front porch. Spring grass and more wildflowers blanketed small lawns on either side of the walkway.

It was like he’d driven through some mysterious portal and emerged into a dream. It was a weird cross between The Sound of Music and Narnia.

A large bronze knocker fashioned in the shape of a wolf’s head was fixed to the front door. As he raised it, the door opened.

“Hello. You must be Jack Martin,” she said. “I’m Elizabeth.”

She was short, with an athletic build and shoulder-length auburn and gray hair. She was attractive, without a stitch of makeup that Jack could see, and wore cargo pants and hiking boots.

Jack shook her hand. “Thank you for letting me come on short notice.”

Elizabeth waved him off. “It’s no problem,” she said, ushering him into the house and shutting the door. “Your timing is perfect.
